It is different for each person. I served in Viet Nam and was contantly around death, some say it is a premonition, others say it's a lingering smell from rotting of flesh. I contend it's smell is as indivudule as you are. I truly belive death has a very distinctive smell. It doesn't mean your fortelling death, but it is often in the air and it can linger for days. It's not too common of a subject and most won't or can't talk about it, but don't feel alone or fearfull if it happens. It's likley not a physic power.
It smells,... like the taste of ear-wax.

smell like wet soil, i had been to indigenous village in borneo and they kept the corpse in house for 7 days before bury it.
Decomposing bodies smell slightly sweet, extremely unpleasant.
Mothballs and cordite.
Rotting meat.
