A woman, clearly upset, wandered into the parking lot outside my home, while I was getting the groceries out of the car. She told me she was crying because she had just briefly gotten back together with her abusive boyfriend, and he had brought her to his new apartment she had never been to before, but that he got violent again and she ran out of his apartment and hadn't stopped until she reached my parking lot. She asked for directions to her house, and was appalled to find out that she was practically across town, with no money for a taxi, and further worries because her once-again ex was out in his car hunting her down. She took off sobbing in the direction of her house. I decided to give her a ride home. I went inside my home and asked my wife to come along so this lady wouldn't feel uncomfortable (after all, she was running away from an abusive *man*), then we drove down the street and picked up the sad woman. We drove her home and made pleasant conversation the whole way, so that she was smiling when she finally hopped out of the car. It was a long way to drive, but very few other actions have made us feel this good.
