I agree, sometimes more than a kernel. People wouldn't identify with them or use them as much if that wasn't the case.

My great grandmother said this about inferiority complexes: There is no inferiority complex, it IS inferiority! (with some of her tongue in cheek, of course). With clichés, it is the same.

I think you are on to something. Sort of like that saying about how there is an ounce of truth in every joke. I guess it's not worth saying things that have no meaning.
