Marcellus Wallace's soul.----Remember the bandaid on the back of his head? That's where they pulled his soul from. When the briefcase opens, it's glowing. What else besides something as devine as a human soul could have this effect? And why was Marcellus so intent that many people had to die to retrieve said briefcase?

That's a mystery that's never solved. Even Tarantino has said he doesn't know and he likes it that way : ) The combination of the mysterious suitcase is "666", the "number of the beast." Whenever asked, director Tarantino has replied that there is no explanation for the case's contents: it is simply a MacGuffin. (a plot device with no explanation) Originally, the case was to contain the diamonds stolen in Reservoir Dogs, but this was seen as too mundane. For filming purposes, the briefcase contained an orange light bulb, silver foil, and a battery. Despite Tarantino's explanation, many theories have been proposed for the contents of the briefcase. Its what Hitchcock called a "McGuffin" its a plot device, it served no purpose other than to move the plot on.

I agree that it is Marcellus' soul. Consider the following: Harvey Keitel (who is linked to Marcellus) is called the "Wolf" and Butch is picked up in a cab by Esmeralda Villa Lobos. Her name translates to the "Emerald or Gem of the House of Wolves". In folk lore, werewolves were the natual enemis of vampires, the spawn of the devil. Therefore, by extension, they are natural enemies of the Devil. Esmeralda tells Butch that he "killed the other boxer man". Butch is surprised perhaps pleasantly so. Both Marcellus and Butch sold their souls to the Devil. Butch tried to cheat to get money to buy his back but by killing the "other boxer man", he has given the Devil a replacement soul, just as Marcellus did by throwing Tony Rocky Horror out of a window. Interestingly enough, both men who sold their souls come to blows in the pawn shop and by taking yet more lives ensure that their souls are safe from the Devil.
