Does standing up for extended time periods cause varicose veins?

    Varicose veins are caused by defective and/or damaged valves within the veins. Some experts think inherited problems cause some people to have too few valves or valves that do not function properly, also some people may be born with abnormalities of the vein wall. The resulting weakness may predispose the valves to separate and become leaky. Prolonged standing can aggravate the situation but is not thought to be a cause.

    Other than genetics, standing and sitting for prolonged periods are the most important factors that lead to the formation of varicose veins. When you stand for prolonged periods, blood pools in your legs and causes veins to dilate. Over time, the one-way vein valves will not be able to shut in the dilated veins to direct the blood towards the heart. Consequently, more and more blood will pool in your legs, leading to even more enlarged veins and the formation of unsightly varicose veins. The condition is known as venous reflux.
