  • We have kind of a modified schedule in Hawaii. Summer vacation is only 6 weeks. My feeling is this. For elementary it is great so kids don't lose the retention. For high school it sucks. These teenagers need to have the opportunity for summer jobs. Having a job is the next step for those who don't go to college. Getting work experience is important. In summary, great for elementary and terrible for high school.
  • No. I spent alot of my spare time studying, not through necessity but purely because there was so much I wanted to learn, and now, as an adult, I feel that there is alot of stuff about being a human being that I just haven't learnt because I was too busy studying and not spending enough time socializing. If you don't allow kids to be kids then you will create misery and trouble. They have enough school. They need time to learn the things that aren't taught at school.
  • Yes. When the United States had an agrarian-based economy the children were needed on the farm during the summer to perform chores related to the growing season. Of course, most students don't live on farms anymore and much of the human labor on farms has now been mechanized. I think continuing this system places the United States at a competitive disadvantage with the rest of the world. I favor year-round school with 2-3 week breaks between the school periods. The biggest barrier is the cost of running the buildings for the entire year and retrofitting the buildings with air conditioning as well as negotiating a full school year calendar with the various unions.
  • Yeah if school was all year long instead of just half the year we could finish all of the stuff we learn in high school now by the end of 6th grade. imagine the efficiency and intellegence
  • Not really. By the end of each semester I'm on the verge of pulling my hair out from stress and doing so much school work. Mabye its just engineering, but I would have cracked up by now if we didn't have a month off at christmas and all summer off
  • I think that they should have shorter breaks - just more of them. The summers are so stinking hot down south! At worst, they should swap out their long summers for long autumns or falls.
  • There are many different ways to schedule a year round school. For an excellent of both side of the story, see this excellent article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year-round_school
  • I started to ask this question and found yours so I came to see the results you had. I personally always thought that it should be year round because they take off for summer vacation and when the new year comes around they spend a quarter reteaching what last years work, because the kids don't remember because of the long break. I think they should do it year round and give more breaks but shorter. They also talked about having the kids only go to school until around noon, which would be a good idea. Even when I was in school I didn't see the point in summer vacation. Breaks are nice, but they don't need to be that long. I am interested in what other ppl think of this issue and will keep checking out your question to see what you get! ;-}
