  • it only takes average of 5 years from hatching for them to mature enough to lay their own eggs, in ideal circumstances only 2 years so you could have up t 7 generations in there assuming perfect conditions. also they can only effect certain woods and most modern wood is treated and is not palatable to them. water pipes can often make a tapping noise also. a good test is to tap in a similar way to the beetle with your fingernail or something metallic close to where you hear the noise. as it is a mating ritual the beetle will often tap back believing you are another male beetle, they will often try to make their taps as loud and as many as possible to prove they are the bigger beetle. so if your taps are too many and too loud you will scare them and they wont tap back, though you can be rewarded with a few minuts silence.
