Geologists and meteorologists hold the consensus that the topography of North America is what makes tornadoes so common. As for hurricanes and earthquakes, those are just because the faults and tracks are there... As for a connection with the allegedly sparse population of native peoples, I don't think it has a direct correlation, though I'm sure it had some impact, especially in the population distribution.
