  • Because they show propaganda movies to their new employees on how unions are bad. What does this have to do with your question? Not a lot. I just found this out from a buddy who applied to work at Wal-mart and I think it is freaking hilarious. As for actually answering your question - they are cheap and don't like having too many employees is my guess.
  • Walmart in my city have this new automated voice thing with up to ten counters when one becomes available it says 'Please go to # 1 or 2 etc. seems to speed things up a bit.
  • Wal mart union whooes the illegal imergrant workers got them into a big ol mess pluss our non resession state [yah right] they are figuring ways to recoup the money lost on hourly workers and the cost of importing all the goods and still selling at a low price
  • Checkers cost money to employ. That cuts into their profits. You will wait in line whether there are 3 checkers or 13, so why should they put out the money for more checkers? And yes, they do show videos to their employees about the horrible effects of unions on the system and the employees. It is blatant propaganda to keep the unions out of Wal Mart and allowing them (Wal Mart) to get away with the sad way they treat their employees. No checkers union means low paid checkers and not enough of them available. There are online classes and tests about the history of Wal Mart, how to do your job, the filthy unions, etc. They are mandatory. You will lose your job if you don't participate. I was employed there for 6 months before I ever got to the one about how to do my job. They had me working so much that there was no time for the classes. I nearly lost my job because they wouldn't let me have the time to do them!
  • At my store, the self checkouts were removed because they borke down so much and some people would scan and bag their stuff and not pay. They were replaced with regular registers. Cashiers are hired almost weekly but they quit coming to work, steal or call in. Why do some people even bother getting a job if they don't want to work? The pay starts well above minimum wage - more than flippin burgers....
  • they have plenty of employees. They just refuse to work them. My sis in law was hired to work there and they scheduled her 2 hours a week... that doesn't even cover her fuel to go to work..I worked there and trust me when I tell you that they have employees to work the front.. Most of the time the employees are sent to straighten up or do something else.. Their full time is 28 hours a week..they worked me 10 weeks 40 hours a week that 11th week they dropped me to 15..then they didn't have to pay me benefits because I was still considered part time. that place is a joke
  • Their profits aren't high enough to employ a lot of check-out clerks because of all the shoplifting that goes on.
  • Walmart making their employees work, now don't you think you are just asking to much of them?!?!? It baffles me, why would they pay to put 30 + registers in and only open one or two
  • I have had this same problem shopping at Meijer. This is one of the many reason I won't shop at WalMart and I rarely shop at Meijer. (Although, there, I can't seem to get through a line in less than 20 minutes.)
