What is 1080p?

    A measure of the resolution and scanning method used for televisions.

    1080 refers to the number of horizontal lines the image tube or plasma screen can display.

    p refers to progressive scan, a method of scanning where the image is drawn consecutively, line 1 is drawn and is followed by line 2, etc. The other scanning method is i for interlaced where line 1 is drawn, then lines 3, 5, etc until the bottom of the image is reached. Then the scanner goes back and draws lines 2, 4, 6, etc to produce the whole image.
