How do pets (dogs, cats) know what their name is? There's this white cat with black spots who I like to call Cow. How would I get it to answer me when I call it Cow? How long would it take?

Keep feeding cow, keep calling the cat cow after time it will learn that Cow is the name or noise that coincides with food, they are responsive, or food driven.

My cats come when I call them because I have been saying their name in the same pitch every time I call them, they don't associate their name with food necessarily (it's hard to tell, so many variables) , unless you only say their name every time you are about to feed the cat, that would be more obvious. If you associate calling the cat with petting or feeding it, it will surely come when it's comfortable.

I had a cat called Toby that would never come when called so you could have a tough task here, but just be kind to the cat and call it by the name you have chosen and see how it goes. You might be lucky it might decide to adopt you if it finds you worthy!
Animals may not understand names the way we do, but they will respond to names, sometimes for food or just curious. I have two rabbits that will come when called just to see what is going on...they are very inquisitive.
I think dog's have the best understanding of names and indeed words generally, my dog knows not only his own name, but my name and the name of his cousin Jessica (a border collie), but they may be picking up on other cues as well as the words...so it is hard to judge their level of understanding. Certainly for dogs smells are more important than words! In that respect we are quite dumb in their eyes!

Most animals don't actualy learn there name and just respond to the happiness in your voice, if they detect anger they usualy stay away.

show the cat that when saying cow, you are referring to it. feed it and talk to it. it depends on how intelligent the cat is. if it is dumb, it will take a long time. if it is really smart, i will catch on quite quickly.

    HI DEAR HUMAN

I AM MR.TIDDLES, THE CAT FROM ACROSS THE STREET, AND FROM A CATS POINT OF VIEW, I DONT LIKE TO BE DOWNGRADED TO A MEASILY COW. WE CATS ARE VERY INTELLGENT AND SOPHISTICATED MAMMALS, AND WE HAVE A ROYAL BLOOD LINE TO THAT OF JESUS CHRIST, AND SO WE WOULD APPRECIATE AND REACT BETTER TO BEING CALLED 'PRINCE CAT, HOLY BEARER OF THE GRAIL', AND ALSO A SMALL OFFERING OF A ROAST HOG WITH AN IRISH LAPDANCE WOULD SURELY GAIN OUR RESPECT.

    GOOD LUCK ON YOUR TRAVELS

Trust me, animals do not know their names. They can only tell the difference of their owner's voice and some stranger's voice. Get some stranger to call your pet's name and see how that works.
