I'm not sure if there is still lead but, I know they use carbon alot now. At least that's what some TV show about pencil making told me.

They use to make lead pencils back before they relised they were dangerous, now they are mainly made with graphite. I believe the lead ones are still available on special order.

They did say clay on that TV show! I remember now. Sorry!

Pencils as we know them today never contained lead. Lead is a little too hard for writing on paper (http://www.webmineral.com/data/Lead.shtml). That which we call pencils have always been made from graphite. However, when graphite was first discovered it was incorrectly thought to be some kind of a derivative of lead. Thus, the idea that pencils contained lead.
