Even if you do not make a lot of money, you still have a duty to support your child. The fact that the other parent makes more money than you never absolves you of your responsibility to support your child.

first question: This can happen when the rest of the circumstances are fully explained and understood by the court. second question: I know of no one this has ever happened to. If it did, their lawyer should be fired.

I did about the same thing. I make 60K, the Ex iherited an estate worth 4.5 million and she wouldn't let me off the hook, either. I paid 20% of net and struggled for years. Illinois really sucks.
