Why does the 32-bit date/time integer (i.e. the Unix Timestamp) start on January 1st, 1970? Why that particular date instead of say, 1960, 1969, 1971, or 1980?

Because the folks who developed Unix wanted it to last as long as possible on 32 bits, start on a "round number" date, and were willing to sacrifice the ability to represent dates in the past. 1970 was the most recent "round number" date that attracted them (1980 hadn't happened yet!)
