ANSWERS: 5
  • Some people call intuition a sixth sense. For instance when I was little my Mom always knew when I was getting into something I wasn't supposed to do.
  • Intuition is good. I know that balance is also counted as a sense, hence knowing there are more than five. Are there others out there as well?
  • See: http://www.harpercollins.com.au/drstephenjuan/0207news.htm There's a New Scientist article, 29 Jan 2005 by Bruce Durie, on how many senses we have. The only wrong answer is 5 (Aristotle's answer): vision, hearing, touch, taste, smell. Defensible answers are * 3: the number of types of stimulus: light (photons), chemicals (smell, and internal sensors), mechanical (touch and hearing). * 9: vision, hearing, smell, taste, touch, pain, mechanoreception (balance etc.) temperature, interoreceptors (e.g. blood pressure, bladder stretch). * 21 * 33 (Draper, steve, 2005) regards Dr. P.
  • All five of them. Sight Tough Hearing Taste Smell
  • It depends how they get interpreted and categorised or who you believe. 9 or 11 categorises many as the same sense, but whether they are one and the same is disputed. It is far from a set and complete understanding. Are hunger and thirst the same life survival sense or two seperate systems, you feel the difference between the two. I'm sure there will be much further understanding in years to come. Here are some to look at which are considered additional senses to the 5 of Aristotle: Equilibrioception - balance Proprioception - is a weird one, seems obvious but slightly wrong at the same time, how you sense where your body parts are when your eyes are closed. Thermoception - is the sense of heat Nociception - sense of pain
