I like to acknowledge people for taking the time to answer my questions in addition to giving points.

If it works for you. However, I find I like getting comments on my answers, even if it's just a thanks. Besides, it's polite. And, since I like it, I try to make sure I do so to everyone who answers mine. I DO try to add some witty remark based on the answer to my thanks, though.
