There are a few points to consider with this question. 1) Universal healthcare would mean a significant increase in the taxes we would have to pay. Although I am all for it, many Americans would not vote to increase taxes. 2) Insurance companies would lose billions of dollars (and some go out of business altogether). Insurance companies consistently lobby politicians to ensure that these types of proposals never become law. 3) In a universal healthcare system all people get free healthcare (not free, but paid for in taxes) so people who are homeless or unemployed still get the same healthcare as the millionaires. Politicians and rich folk do not like that they would no longer get the preferential treatment, or the idea of paying for others' healthcare Hope this helps

Believe it or not, you can have universal health care without making it free or solely paid by taxes. Universal simply means making sure everyone will be covered, not necesarily that the government will pay for everything. Check out Obama's plan for healthcare. There are still costs involved, people pay. However, there would be aid available for those who cannot.

It would cut on the profits of millions of greedy people! Perhaps even upsetting the entire US economy.

Number one, It is NOT the governments job to provide us with health care. Number two, I don't know that universal health care is really successful anywhere. My girlfriends mother is an RN at a health care center here in Montana and almost half of their customers are Canadians who come across the border and pay for health care here because the Canadian universal health care system is so overloaded and poor that they have to wait weeks or months for even marginal treatment at times.
