speech impediment also referred to as Speech Disorder is a communication disorder where 'normal' speech is disrupted. This includes stuttering, lisps, etc. Someone who is totally unable to speak due to a speech disorder is considered mute. Even if a child can't pronounce "R"s, like gwamm instead of gram, which I think is sooo cute. You wouldn't want your adult child sounding like Elmer Fudd. He has a speech impediment.
