Most people that age don't want any more stuff (at least, that's how my dad feels and he's 80) so I wonder if you could do something nice for him instead. Is there an airshow near you that you could take him to some time? You could suggest taking him for a day out to one and making a day of it as a birthday treat, even if it's not actually on his birthday but some time in the future. Mabye it would be nice to have that to look forward to.
