The motor cortex part of the brain controls the body’s voluntary muscle movement. Certain areas of the body such as the lips and fingers occupy larger areas on the motor cortex area of the brain than other parts of the body such as the legs and the back. http://www.morphonix.com/neuromatrix_t3.html

The motor cortex controls the planning and execution of a movement. The motor cortex consists of the primary motor cortex, the supplementary area, the presupplementary area and the premotor areas. The primary motor cortex is seen as the output area which sends signals directly to the spinal cord to in turn contract the specific muscles. However, recent research (Graziano et al. 2002, 2006) suggests that the output might not be only in the primary motor cortex. The different areas work together to coordinate the various muscle contractions and relaxations that are involved in even the simplest of movements.
