you could also assume simpler names were snatched up early on in the internet boom and now arent available...for instance some dude bought pizza.com like 15 years ago for $10 and just sold it recently for around 20 million

Several reasons: 1) Most typical web addresses are taken. Try almost any simple word you can think of and surround it by "www.word.com". In almost all cases the site is already registered. So companies need to come up with a new name. 2) Companies need short easy to remember web addresses for people to easily find them and remember. 3) Marketing folks have found that certain syllables are appealing to the majority of people. A well known example is "Viagra". The word itself encourages people to think well of the product.
