They are just thanking you for considering there bussines, and hopfully the nex time you stop by they will be open to look after your needs. Its just them being polite.

The closed part is obvious. They are closed. But, they do want your business... they just want you to come back later. "Please call again" is another way of saying please stop by again. They just want you to come back while they are open so that they can do business with you then.

"To call on" someone doesn't mean to pick up the telephone and call them. It is another way of saying "to visit" them. It's an old-fashioned saying, but it sticks around because it's on so many signs!

The other answers are correct. An alternate reason was given to me once by a pharmacist friend: "Open" and "Closed" signs are often posted on doors. A customer who has just conducted business who is leaving through the doorway also sees the sign and glances at the "Please call again" request. So it works two ways. swabby
