  • Canada the USA and some Caribbean countries share approximately 800 area codes. The maximum number of phone #'s possible in this system is approximately 6.4 billion phone numbers. Area codes are numbered from 201 to 999. Each area code has approximately 800 prefixes numbered from 200-999, each prefix has 10,000 phone numbers. Not all area codes, and prefixes are used and some are reserved for special uses. Here is a list of area codes in use right now: http://www.bennetyee.org/ucsd-pages/area.html In some areas, when they run out of phone numbers, they add an area code (this is called an area code overlay), it requires everyone to use 10 digit dialing to call people in the affected area codes. Instead of using an overlay area code, an area code can also be "split" and one side of the split has to take a new area code to replace the one they had previously. Seven digit dialing is still possible after a split. California requires area code splits so that 7 digit dialing will always be possible.
