Why would uranium compounds blacken photographic plates?

The plates are coated in a chemical which has the property of changing composition when photons of light strike the atoms or ions in the chemical. I can't remember what kind(s) of radiation Uranium emits, but gamma radiation is just high frequency light and will have the same effect. Alpha and beta radiation have charge that at close range can have the same effect on the chemicals that light does.
