Remove all the electrical parts and wiring to recycle, remove and dismantle the doors, seal any holes, then lay it down on it's side and use for a water trough. Maybe partially bury it and use for a fish pond.
Also can make a good above ground planter when filled with dirt, or a compost holder.
I have an extravagent yarn "stash," as us knitter/ crafter types call our hordes of yarn that we save and couldn't use in a lifetime.
I've heard some stashers keep their yarn in retired refrigerators. The door storage is especially useful for creating a "filing system."
My neighbor made a smokehouse out of one, he used an old dishwasher to burn the fire in. The smoke pipe goes from the dishwasher to the refrigerator. He hangs the meat in the refrigerator. Of course it's outside.
Post them on freecycle.com or craigslist.org. Someone who can use them will come get them.
Give it to a needy family.
I live where it gets really cold in the winter, my dogs are small, and they stay in the garage alot when I am gone. it is warmer in the garage then it is outside, but it still gets cold, so I have been thinking of using an old ref. that I was going to throw away as an indoor dog house. i was going to do this by cutting a hole in the side of the ref. to use as a dog door, and laying it on its back, so that I have an indoor dog house. yes it is really trashy sounding, but I figured it is a large, insulated, plastic lined, steel box. I may also put a warming light in it, but not sure about the safety issues etc.. also considering whether to drain the system etc... well it is an idea? i am going to throw it away anyway in the spring, unless it works really well then I will clean and keep it. it will save a lot of wood that I was going to use to make a dog house, and it way better insulated then the dog house I was going to make?
I've been wanting to make an air conditioner out of one for a while now. Throw a fan on it, cram it in one of your vents and there you have it. Sure, you have to put the warm part of the coil outside or something, but it would still be kinda cool.
Use it as a heat pump to take heat from the ground and send it to your home!
The vacuum pump can be useful in any number of applications, vacuum ethanol distillation comes to mind ;)
[Purely for fuel of course!]
Just send your old refrig off to the transfer station (dump) and forget about it. I've saved old gadgets all my life, and now my basement is so full of unused stuff I need to hire a sherpa to get through it.
Save only those items you have an immediate use for. Everything else should be recycled. Your old refrig will be salvaged for parts by someone with a need.
Bury it on the nort side of the house, door up. Vent it and use as a root cellar if you dont have a basement.
dismantle it and recycle or you could make a redneck canoe out of it besides that i really don't know... good question

You're reading Any good uses for an old refrigerator that will otherwise be sent off to a recycling place or whatnot? I really would like to find some DIY uses for the components of one. I have two that Were getting rid of.
