Why, at the last moment, do wild animals decide to run across the road when they know a heavy moving object is approaching?

I only find that squirrels do this, they must have a death wish.

Born without common sense I suppose. But when I see any animal even near the road, I beep the horn so it runs the other way. Saves lives of the poor things that way.

Instinct tells them.. be still, predator is approaching. Instinct then tells them.. predator is upon me RUN!
