Why is a person who plays a piano called a pianist but a person who drives a race car not called a racist?

For the same reason he is not called a "carist". He is DRIVING the car, hence DRIVER. A pianist is PLAYING the piano, hence pianist (as player is just too general).

Because the word racist is already taken by a much more obnoxious group of people and i'm sure most race drivers don't want that association... also the answer given by slothmister is a good one.

it has to do with playing verses driving. if you played a race card you would be a racist. And if you drove a piano you'd be a piano driver. It's all simple english rules.
