Why is there no gravity in space?

Ther is gravity in space, but since (if you do not turn your rockets on) you are falling freely, you cannot feel it. A satellite in orbit is falling freely. Without gravity, it would go in a straight line. With gravity, it travels in a curve which takes it round the earth an bring is back (if there is no air in the way) to where it started. But in free fall, you cannot feel gravity - even though it is effecting you dramatically.
