It's said that Dracula was based on the very real Vlad the Impaler. Vlad was born in 1431 in the citadel of Sighisoara, Transylvania, the son of Vlad Dracul II. Vlad was a rather cranky battle leader. He would stake his enemies (which is probably what Stoker used for the stake through the heart for vampire) Vlad was so violent and horrible he has not been forgotten. He took Vlad's life, changed a few things around, and came up with a great vampire book.
