  • I'm not sure that you can make the statement that there is such thing as a "typical" water tower. The town I grew up in built a new water tower in the 1970s, that held 2 million gallons. The town I live in now has three water towers that each hold 150,000 to 200,000 gallons. The type of tower that is on "legs" is usually in the range of 100,000 to 200,000 gallons as Glenn stated. The less common "standpipe" type of tower can range up to 2 million gallons or more. The type known as "devils doorknobs" usually are smaller, in the 100,000 to 150,000 range. However, some Devils doorknob type towers can be up to 500,000 gallons.
