Think of a fishing net. Made of individual strands, able to hold something at each end only. Tied together they share the load and can hold things across two dimensions which gives them an entirely new and useful purpose. Think of a phone line or cable. Made of an individual conducting path, allowing an interaction between each end only. Linked together together they allow multiple pathways for information, but also allow information to be distributed to all connected users which gives them an entirely new and useful purpose. (Extend analogy to social networks, wireless networks etc. as appropriate)
