This really depends on what you mean by "working," and what is actually wrong with it. Scientists are still debating the function of the appendix today. Some think that it aids the immune system of the fetus and has no function after birth. I this case, your appendix is useless will never "work" again. Others think that the appendix aid in controling the bacterial counts in your intestines. In this case, your appendix could be "working" or "broken" and you wouldn't notice any drastic differences. If your appendix is infected or inflammed, there is a chance that you could be cured with antibiotics. Doctor recommend removal of the appendix because the consequences are slim to none and the risks of leaving the appendix intact are very serious.
