Does the alcoholic really ever stop verbally and emotionally abusing people after they go to AA and work the steps?

When you sober up an alcoholic asshole, you're left with the asshole. Having said that, it is my experience that alcoholics calm down after a long time of working the Steps rigorously. It's said that they have to be worked daily for the rest of the alcoholic's life to be effective. How long does it take? That's totally dependent on how hard the alcoholic works the Steps in all areas of his/her life. You might see improvement after 6 months to a year, or it might take 5 years. But a change for the better will come.

Both my parents were alcoholics and my dad never has stopped verbally and emotionally abusing people I never really realised that he was doing it to me until I was older and actually stopped to think about things that he said to me, currently I do not have a great relationship with him. My mother emotionally and verbally abuses herself, but she is schitzophrenic so that adds to it. they both have not drank in about 11 or 12 years... but my relationship with bout my parents is almost none existant
