  • I know this is an old question, but I thought I'd take a stab at it! Cheers. It wasn't originally written for a boat trip down the Thames. King George I requested a concert ON the River Thames. Handel composed Water Music to regain favor of the king (although this is disputed by some Handel biographers). The concert WAS performed on July 17, 1717 and was performed with the orchestra and King George on his barge. Legend says that King George loved the suite so much that he ordered the musicians to play it three times on the trip. It is interesting to note that all the instruments of the Baroque orchestra were brought onto the king's boat...except the harpsichord...over 50 musicians!
