There are many newer trainers on the market since I built my first plane (Goldber Eagle 2) and many like it (Great Planes PT40) but what might work best is first get with a local club and see what people may have around collecting dust. Sometimes you may find an experienced RCer who has an old trainer collecting dust that you can get complete for a good price and ...it's better to learn on something that won't break your heart when it crashes. There are also "dura" planes that are made to survive crashes with minimal or no damage... great to learn on. But also find out what radio the club instructor is using so you won't have any problems connecting with a "buddy-box". If you are looking for the experience of building your first plane from a kit, start with something basic in the 040 range and build it four channel with ailerons.
