run. no i don't think that is the right answer i think you are supposed to make yourself look as big as possible, i'm pretty sure a bear would run your ass down and eat you like a corndog
-
Freeze and play dead. normally, a bear will not attack, unless provoked. In this untimely event, RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN!!!
-
Make yourself big. well look big and dont run. they can follow you becasue they have great noses!
-
Remember: you don't have to outrun the bear. Just outrun your friends.

Unless it's a black bear, climb up a tree. FAST!!! If there are no trees I go with Stableboy's answer. And. If you have no friends to sacrifice to the bear. Play dead as dead can be. You might as sh*t and piss yourself but be Motionless, be a rag doll, it will mess with you and even ruff you up a bit but stay relaxed. But if it starts attacking, fighting back (would of course) be useless. If the bear looks like a softie gulge'em in the eyes with something of stab'em down the throat with a stick . If the bear the bear it a hard-ass than try to die as fast as you can (don't commit sucide). For goodness sake down let em eat you alive. But seriously. Say a prayer even will you're being attack. Try praying, you'll be surprised.

This depends on the specific situation. Sometimes if you startle a bear it will attack on reflex, just to protect itself, especially if it has cubs. To prevent this some people tie pots or other noisy apparel on the outside of their packs to clang around and warn bears of their approach. In these circumstances it is best not to look big or intimidating, but to be docile, so as to not look like a threat. Stay quiet and still, no fast movements, and do not run. Slowly back away, put distance between you and the bear or it's cubs so it knows you are not a threat. If it does attack you stay still. When you are on the ground cover your face and neck, as this is where most injuries occur, and try to pull or twist a little as it bites down to prevent it from getting a good grip and crushing your skull. If after the initial attack it returns or does not leave, it may switch to a predatory attack, where it actually intends to eat you. Fight. Hit it with a stick or rock, gouge it's eyes or whatever else you can do to try and kill or wound it severely. If the initial encounter is while you are making lots of noise, and do not startle or surprise a bear, but it knows you are there and approaches you, it is likely a predatory attack. In this case you want to look big and aggressive, like something that is not an easy meal. Yell at the bear, throw rocks and sticks at it, charge towards it. If it gets close enough hit it. Do not run, because you are left exposed, it can easily outrun the fastest man alive. Make your way to shelter, a car, tree or house, but never lose track of where the bear is so you can fend it off while you try to get away. Try to keep windfalls, dense trees or vegetation between you and the bear. The species of bear is of some relevance, black bears are more likely to be involved in predatory attacks, but brown bears have also been responsible for several such attacks, and some defensive attacks which turned into predation. Brown bears have been known to climb a tree to pull a man out of it, and some of them being over a thousand pounds they can also knock over smaller trees. They also know how to roll logs to the base of a tree to stand on so they can reach higher. I've seen many trees scratched up 10 feet above ground. A general rule when you are liable to encounter bears is to always be prepared to defend yourself with lethal force. Bear spray can keep them off for a while, but they learn to close their eyes and exhale when you point it at them, so you'll have to outsmart them, wait until they open their eyes again before you spray them, or fake them out to buy some time witohut using all your capsacin. A shotgun with slugs or alternating buck shot and slugs is the preferred weapon for self defense. It has a slow muzzle velocity with limited range and accuracy, but a very heavy bullet which is good for slowing a bear down when it's in close. While I was swimming and surveying rivers full of salmon I encountered hundreds of bears. Being by myself sometimes a hundred miles from help I would routinely pack a rifle, bear mace and a diving knife. Sometimes if there was thick brush woudl also have a machete. On one such trip I was packing heavy for a 20km round trip, 10k up the river then swimming down. When leaving the road and crashing through brush down a steep and densely covered hill I somehow lost my machete from its sheath. I tried going back up to find it but gave up after a bit, heading down the river. There were a lot of boulder andbedrock runs, with some big pools, so there was rough walking and some swimming, somewhere in the river I lost my knife. 150 bucks! Had that thing for 6 years. No problem, still got my mace. ? where's my mace? Well now I'm down three of my four weapons, but the rifle is pretty dependable, a 303 lee enfield issued to me by he Armed Forces Reserves. That one was built more than 60 years ago and still chomping at the bit. Anyways, I got down to the flat section of river near the ocean, and came across a huge log jam in the river. At the top were very fresh bear tracks. Knowing this is an ideal place for bears to catch fish, and the recent tracks, I thought it wise to step up my level of preparedness. I loaded a mag into the rifle, but when I closed the breech there was no tension on the bolt. It just slid in like nothing. Looking closely at it I notice the firing pin is not clearing the face...the firing pin is broken two inches back in the bolt, there is no way to fire this weapon. Still not a big deal, I've seen hundreds and hundreds of bears and I've never had to fire a shot or mace one. I just start making my way down the log jam, countig fish. Soon I lose track of everything except the numbers in m head. I get to the bottom of the jam, and see there's a big pol there, likely to have a lot of fish. I look intently at the clear sections as I approach to see the fish darting for cover, and just as I step onto the last log in the pile, it startles and runs away. That was no charred log, that was a bear I just stepped on! Luckily it's refelx was to run and not attack right away. But it didn't run far. Only about ten feet, to the top of the bank, at the end of the log I was standing on. We sat there sizing each other up for an eternity, trying to decide what to do. I was defenseless. There wasn't even a branch or rock within reach, just a few twigs washed up on the top of the logs. I decided I had to convince the bear I was not food, I reached for those twigs, crouching low and grasping below my feet, and the bear seeing how small I was when I wasn't standing suddenly perked his ears forward, raised his snout a bit and stepped towards me. I got up quickly with my pathetic twigs and pulled my raincoat out to the sides, tripling my size in seconds. The bear stopped, but his interest was definitely aroused. I threw the twig at him, nearly smacking him in the nose with it, and he ran off faster than an olympic sprinter. Later he returned to follow me through the bush at a distance, but I was close enough to my zodiac to exit before anything more transpired. Not long before that I was on the Nahwitti River. This time I had a friend along, packing the rifle while I was swimming. We got through the surf into the river, and went up a mile before beaching the boat and departing on foot. we didn't get twenty feet before I was stepping over a windfall, leaning on a standing tree when I head rustling and scraping. Looking at the tree I was leaning on, four feet appeared straddling my hand from the far side of the tree. Suddenly a bear cub poked it's head arond the tree and looking me in the eye began crying plaintiffly. My partner began stammering, "what do I do" and working the bolt frantically. "Give me the gun", I replied, and loaded a round. I looked around for the mother, and there about 60 feet away was a very large sow, looking intently at me. We slowly backed away, and as soon as she saw us putting some istance between us and th cub, she slowed and kept her distance, following until we were in the boat and off to land on the other side of the river. So there are examples of dissuading both a defensive attack and a potential predatory attack by timely and appropriate action, without killing the bear. However; do not underestimate their hunting skills or potential danger. Also in BC a bear came into a loggging camp with forty people and drug a man out of his tent. Many men came to his aid, but were unable to fend the bear off, hitting it with 2X4s, rocks and sticks. It repeatedly returned and attacked the same man over and over again. Another, black bear this time, attacked several people in Liaird hot springs, killing several while onlookers tried to beat it off with sticks, partially eating one of the survivors as it pinned the still concious man down. There were two hunters who killed a caribou. While one was gutting the animal, the other stood watch. Both had rifles within reach, evidence indicates one have actually had it in his hands and tried to fire a round but jammed it. A brown bear snuck up on them and killed them both, eating much of them, and was not even injured. Another bear persistently returned to pursue two men in the bush even after they sprayed it many times with bear mace. They ran out of mace just beore they reached the safety of their truck, two large cans. I could tell you at least forty more encounters that would make most people stay out of the woods altogether... At a bare minimum I carry a knife with a full shank and 6 inch blade. It is pitifully underarmed considering the ablities of a bear, but better than nothing. I could go on for hours, and nothing is even relevant, so smell ya later.

Make a lot of noise and run right at it. Just hope you scare the bear more than the bear scares you.

Why do I know I am about to piss off all Animal Rights Activist....what I would do would be open fire and not let up til I knew my Glock was empty of bullets hoping the sound would scare the huge grizzly that likes eating anything it can get his hands on way. My luck it would be "Smokey the Bear" but he wears a ranger hat and easily recognizable. LOL but my first instinct would be to keep myself and all others out of harms way.
