  • If I owned a book that was 3000 years old, that would be awesome. But I do have a lot of stories that were written in the late 1700's and early 1800's, and even one dating back to 1616. But yeah there's a difference. A favourite old story or book really does take me somewhere because I'm not familiar with the styles and habits of back then, so I really have to be in the mood to read old vampire romance stories, but reading a favourite modern book is always a bit easier, since it happens, depending, in an environment that I can easier relate to. Also speech fashion and literal structure is really different.
  • Well, the Bible is the only 3000 year old book that I know of and it's so unlike any other book, I can't compare it. However, Robinson Crusoe took me back in time with all the details and gave me a good idea of how things were then. The writer was actually a sailor and I believe that he was shipwrecked for real once.

I read Bram Stoker's Dracula a couple of years back, and thoroughly enjoyed it, but found it peculiar that it was some way into the book that the Count was revealed as being a vampire, especially as I knew all along. They often have to be read with the idea that people didn't know what was going to happen in mind, where as modern books don't because you actually don't know. Thirdly, understanding some traditions, practices etc. mentioned is interesting in older books, and it often leaves you wondering why they are struggling to, for example, get in touch with people. E-mail, damn it. Oh they haven't got computers. Well is there mobile phone not switched on? Lastly, I books older than, say, mid 1800s are often translated to make them easier to read, so there will be some of the translators writing style embellishing the book, which books which are not translated do not have
