Why does music strike up different emotions within ourselves?

We interpret the lyrics as if they were written for us. Hearing someone else pinpoint our emotions and make them beautiful can move a person. Sometimes we don't know the words, and the singer does.

Aside from the very good answer Slothy gave concerning lyrics, I have a theory about the tunes that strike us. I have often wondered why I like certain tunes better then others and my theory is we are attracted to music that has a rhythm or beat closest to our own individual heartbeat. Just my thoughts on the matter, of course. :o)

Sometimes it reminds us of what was happening in our lives at the time the song was new to us. The lyrics are like poetry and the writter means to give us an emotional response. For some reason, I don't know why, the music itself just seems to make us happy.
