Not sure exactly what the record is but I watched a race on TV the other day and they had some technical equipment for measuring the speed. I think the fastest they went was about 49mph.

Thoroughbred horses gallop up to a speed of about 45mph. American Quater Horses can gallop to up a speed of about 55mph. However.. even thought quater horses can move fast they do not have the stanima to go the distance where as throughbreds can keep on going..
