I'm not sure what you mean by "went the other way", but if you're talking about reversing the direction the cars run in, that's a bad idea on several fronts. There's a very good reason why the cars run counterclockwise on oval tracks--safety. Running in that direction means that in the great majority of cases, if a car hits the wall, it's going to hit on the side away from the driver. There are other reasons. Running counterclockwise puts the left side of the car next to the pit wall on pit stops. Again, for safety reasons, the fuel filler is on the side of the car closest to the pit wall. If they turned around and ran clockwise, the teams would have to move the fuel filler to the right side of the car. That's certainly possible, but the teams wouldn't want to do that just for the sake of variety. Without getting hugely technical, I can just tell you that an oval track car is designed and set up to turn left. Reversing direction would mean making some major changes in order to get the car to handle properly. Again--a lot of work for essentially no reason.
