Sure, microwave ovens do not have regular check ups for leakage of the microwave.. and therefore could cause your brain cells to "cook". Have your microwave oven checked every two years for leakage. There is always some... Always stay at minimum 2 feet away from a microwave when it is cooking.

Electromagnetic radiation ranges from the energetic x-rays to the less energetic radio frequency waves used in broadcasting. Microwaves fall into the radio frequency band of electromagnetic radiation. You can stand as close to your microwave as you like when it's in use - there is little cause for concern about excess microwaves leaking from ovens unless the door hinges, latch, or seals are damaged. A Federal standard limits the amount of microwaves that can leak from an oven throughout its lifetime to 5 milliwatts (mW) of microwave radiation per square centimeter at approximately 2 inches from the oven surface. This limit is far below the level known to harm people. So, in short then: If the door is hanging off and it's falling to pieces you need to get a new oven, otherwise, knock yourself out, it's safe and so are you.
