If it is having your seatbelt fastened in the car that activates the airbag in an accident why does everybody not always wear seatbelts...otherwise why do they buy the car with airbags?

At least in the US, all cars are required to have air bags. So, you really don't have a choice in the matter.

The seatbelts don't activate the airbag. There is an impact sensor that triggers the airbags.
