  • bad circumstance mental illness drug addiction
  • there are too many reasons to list :)
  • I've always wondered, and maybe someday when I get the guts, I'll ask one.
  • In some cases, they fell like life gave up on them. So they gave up on life.
  • They are usually either mentally ill or drug addicted. Usually both.
  • There are some exceptions, but many of them choose it to avoid responsibility. That is why I never give money or food. I refuse to enable them.
  • In other-wise rich countries, I think there are a few reasons. First and foremost is mental illness. The number of homeless people who are also afflicted with some sort of (serious) mental condition is staggering. Drug-addiction is another huge cause of homelessness. I'd say those two account for the majority of the homeless population, like...85%. The rest are either horribly unlucky, or made poor decisions.
  • I had the chance to learn quite a bit about the subject as the result of a city council commission appointment a few years back. The majority of them have mental problems, but wouldn't be on the street if funding hadn't been cut during the Reagan administraton and never restored.
  • Mental illness and/or substance addiction.
  • They probably don't have much control over their lives, so it's probably hard for them to accept responsibility.
  • They let their fighting spirit die or they are mentally ill.
  • Very many have addictions and gave up on themselves, others have mental problems and have been forgotten by their families and very many others are simply lost in this cruel world. Best regards.
  • often they have been injured in a work situation. they get government assistance. it is not enough to live in an apartment and pay utilities and pay for food. living on the street isnt easy. its a day to day challenge. in my town a rented living room goes for four hundred a month. a storage locker is another hundred a month. one only gets about eight hundred a month on SSI or similar income. jobs are hard to get. especially with a chronic injury. its a catch twenty two.
  • because in the 80's, ronald reagan set alot of mental people free from institutions for monetary reasons.
  • because it costs way too much to buy a house or apartment. The cost of living is ridiculous.
  • It is because there is many more people in the world that do not care. They will eventually pay for their selfishness and one day be in the same state.
  • There are a lot of government housing but illegal immigrants have some of those apartments. The waiting list for a government apartment is up to 25 years in some places. Right now everything is frozen and nobody can even apply. --- we need to build more low income housing for these people but instead places are tearing them down. The problem is the neighbors throw a fit if you try to build there because they don't want "bums" in the neighborhood. -- those who can afford to help won't because it might cost them money or time. It comes down to greed and not caring about others circumstances.
  • Two things that are responsible for the rise in homelessness over the past 15-20 years: a shortage of affordable rental housing and an increase in poverty. Poeple living in poverty are most at risk of becoming homeless.
  • There are more homeless people now, than ever before. its due to the economy and whole families without a home. There is no immediate answer to your question or a solution. Maybe, the real bottom line is greed. Think about it.
  • Because parents do not care what happens after their children is out of their care. They only think of the short term.
  • Not enough birth control, and rich folks with too many houses.
  • Careless humans
  • because they don't want to work! they rather beg than work.
  • Respectfully, if anyone gives you a definitive answer to your question, that person will have SOLVED the homeless situation, nationwide. The solution to any problem, is first having an understanding of the CAUSE of the problem. I have no idea why folks become homeless. +5
  • This is a question that can't really be answered, because it's different for different people. Some get into drugs and end up on the streets, some just lose their jobs, some have mental issues, and some just give up. The reasons are endless. I met a homeless guy named Ralpha several years ago and asked him why he was living on the streets. It turns out that he once had a wife and a daughter and a nice home with a well paying job. He came home from work to find his home had burnt down and his family had died. He gave up after that and lived as a homeless man for the rest of his life.
  • The cheif reason now a days is finance. It may be in the form of loss of job,too much of responsibility to handle or if the lines of expenditure are more than the sources of income. . A soldier or a professional becomes homeless due to the "call of duty". . When kids grow up,they become homeless as they are expected to be independent. . A man or woman becomes homeless after seperation from his/her partner if he/she was dependent on the partner. . Prisoners become homeless as they have finished their term in the prison and the society is reluctant to accept them back. . Finally there are a group of people who are born to be homeless. The elite group of the drug addicts. They never care for home, family, friends or laws. They live their life of illusion till they rest in "pieces".They are better defined as sociopaths. . Being homeless doesn't matter. What matters is ,the reason of being homeless.Hope that helps.
  • Mental illness, family problems, extreme poverty... the reasons are as numerous as the people who are homeless.
  • Many people are homeless, because they are substance abusers or mentally ill.
  • A short answer is that they lose the home they are in and do not, will not or cannot turn to family for support. A member of our family was mildly brain damaged and committed an unspeakable and unforgivable crime. After serving his sentence he became homeless because nobody in the family can speak to him. We know he maintains a small studio apartment now but do not have any communication.
  • Its the economy. Company's cant borrow money like they did. They would refinance and get lower interest and cash back on increased equity. That balloon has popped. . My boss terminated my job in a company wide layoff in May. I was there five years. I lost my financial power. I will lose my home to foreclosure. I will probably be on the street in January. I will live in my truck. And motel it during mid week when the rates are the lowest. I will be okay as long as I dont slip, trip or fall. Or get sick. Or my truck breaks down. Find another job? yah right.
  • Loss of a Job, Loss of a Loved one, Being a Drunk, Using Drugs. i dont know if there is a biggest reason, i think the reasons are really varied. By the way loosing a loved one that means the whole world to you can send you to drugs and drinking. Then again being homeless can send you to drugs and drinking as well.
  • They give up on life. Contributing factors are: 1. ex-convict. no one will hire them 2. infidelity. wife and kids take all his possessions through divorce court. 3. business failure. 4. medical problems. no health or life insurance. 5. drug and alcohol addiction. 6. depression. gives up on life.
  • Alcoholism/addiction
  • Because they are weak, something traumatized them so bad in life they have no ambition to lift themselves up and try again, maybe it's a safe feeling they feel as they can't go any lower!
  • When the homeless population began expanding people assumed the causes were mental illness, laziness, and addiction. It's true that is present among them today. But the explosion in the homeless population happened when technology and it's uses became so prevalent in businesses. We had, and still have, a large percentage of people in the working class who live paycheck to paycheck -- one missed pay check and the rent cannot be paid. The explosion was a direct result of that happening. Corporate downsizing pushed middle management employees into first line jobs, and the first line management people moved into the skilled labor jobs, and the skilled labor folks took the unskilled jobs, the unskilled laborers went to the streets. Once there, it's very hard to get off of the street. Much of the addiction and mental health problems of the homeless today are the result of being on the street, rather than the reverse. We, as a society, are finally realizing that the only way to reduce homelessness is to get people housed. Until then there is little to no hope of employment and reform of addiction.
  • 1. Mentally ill. - 2. addiction. - 3.various excuses. - 4.Lazy and the money they can beg for it tax free.
