Many people believe STAT is an abbreviated form of the Latin word Statim. Over time this mistaken belief has become it's own reality and today, most hospital staff understand STAT to men "Immediately". The origin dates back to the turn of the century when elevators became widely used in urban hospitals. Often in closed elevators one person would smell something unsavory and ask the other passanger..."stat you?". People would often depart quickly out of a foul smelling elevator and hospital staff began to associate the question with moving quickly.
