  • Conservation of angular moment is what causes the planets to spin. As the nebula from which our solar system formed collapsed, random motions of the particles in the nebula canceled each other out until there was a single dominant direction of rotation and the material collapsed into a disk. As the planets formed out of this disk, this particles from which they formed all had rotation as well. This rotation was imparted to the planets as they formed.
