If anyone were to do this, I think it would be grounds to take that person out and give them death by firing squad.

Probably, but I wouldn't recommend that anyone try it! It's way too dangerous... There's just not enough protection!

I would never consider putting a baby (or child) on a motorcycle. There is just not enough protection between them and the pavement. People also tend to not "see" motorcycles until they have run over them.

I'd invest in a sidecar if you are planning on doing such a thing... I've seen babies on bicycle adapted seats but I think even that is a little risky.

I'm not sure of the legalities of it, I think it's best you would check with your department of motor vehicles.

dead leaves raked in a pile

I'm living proof a baby can survive a motorbike. I was born in the UK in the 50's. We were still in rationing. Cars were unattainable. My father had a Squariel with a chair (translation: Ariel Square 4 100cc bike with a sidecar).

I often rode in the chair. There were never any incidents. His approach was to assume all cars were out to get him - but they had to make it look at least partly his fault.

You can carry up to 4 babies on a bike if you have saddle bags, a tank bag, and a tail case. You might be able to tuck another one in the fairing up by the bars, and one in a back pack... so maybe 6. If you get pulled over, let them wander into traffic ala Swee' Pea, and the cop will be so busy collecting them he will not notice your quiet escape.

No, because an infant cannot be fitted with a helmet. And if it could, the helmet alone, without having an accident would cause neck injury by its weight

It's not a question of if you can. Legally, hell no, but you can if you want it's your free will, but don't be surprised when you get your baby taken away from you for good, you get arrested, and put in a mental hospital. These are all things that will happen to you if you ever DID carry a baby on a motorcycle.

Obviously none of you who answered "no" have ever been to Vietnam. We live in Ho Chi Minh and it is common practice to see a baby on a bike, even a whole family! Best count so far is 5 people! Hell, the Government even have a standard issue cane high chair as the approved saftey device - it straps to the front somehow. And I've not (yet) seen a serious accident - the traffic is chaotic but the speed is not excessive and everyone expects the worst - it just seems to work.

I know it is possible as that was our first family 'car' back in the 50s. My parents only had a motorbike, a Matchless. I understand that my mom would hold me in her arms and we'd go about that way when I was very little and then when I could sit, I'd be in the gas tank with my dad holding me in place. I lived to tell about about lol!!!

But it's really not a wise thing to do, unless it would be in a sidecar with a person sitting in that. It's just too risky, especially in this crazy dangerous world.

It would be kind of awkward. Better to tie one end of a string around it's foot and the other to the back of the motorcycle.

The only way I could see this being even close to legal would be in a sidecar in a properly secured child seat. But I kinda doubt it.

    In utero, only please!

In many states the Child Safety Restraint Laws by virtue of requiring a certified child safety seat installed securely and properly will make this illegal.

i think that this is a common sence question! There is no way in hell to protect any child from on comming or affixed objects! heaven forbid the child was affixed to said bike while it was hit or smashed in to something. Shortly i will have to fight a restraining order because my brother did this with a street bike on the dirt with my 6 year old with out a helmet. I called him up and left a message of ,"if you ever hurt anybody in my family, i will kill you." i said this as a sane but pissed off father, and figured i was dealing with a reasonable person. Remember it may not be you giving your child the ride! I deffinetly will be bringing a coppy of the law, and this blog!

I'm fascinated, how many of the 'No, absolutely not, you're an idiot' brigade would say the same if he asked about taking a baby/small child on a bicycle? And don't tell me bicycles are safer than motorcycles because both are as dangerous as the idiot riding them. I've seen small babies carried in the little 'coffins' towed by bicycles and wondered if they realise just how dangerous those stupid things really are!

Most states have something similar to this. It's not based on age, but on being seated criteria.
    CA Automobile Code 27800.
'It is unlawful for a driver of a motorcycle or a motorized bicycle to carry any other person thereon, except on a seat securely fastened to the machine at the rear of the driver and provided with footrests, or in a sidecar attached to a motorcycle and designed the purpose of carrying a passenger. Every passenger on a motorcycle or a motorized bicycle shall keep his feet on the footrests while such vehicle is in motion.'
