Climbing stairs or using a stair climber is effective.

I fast-walk and run. You can also stand on a block with a weight on one foot, bracing yourself against a wall or something and raise your leg (held straight) back and down, back and down. Then change feet and legs. It works. You don't have to go to a gym to do these things. But, you do have to be tough with yourself. You have to do it regular and till it hurts. No pain..no gain.

I do slow and controlled dumbbell squats and lunges and glute kickbacks with extra heavy resitance bands.
