How do puppets and marionettes differ?

    Marionettes have strings. Puppets have internal hands or sticks that animate them from below.

    Actually there is no difference. A marionette is a TYPE of puppet (like a poodle is a type of dog). There are many many types of puppets, and a marionette is simply the one type of puppet that uses strings as a method of operation/manipulation. (The other answer is somewhat incorrect, since 'internal hands and sticks' is simply another mechanism for another type of puppet - usually called mouth puppets, glove puppets, or rod puppets).
