yeast, staph, or strep infections dry lips and skin (particularly during dry winter weather!) B-vitamin deficiencies, including B2 (riboflavin), B6, and B12 iron-deficiency anemia (low red blood cells due to too little iron) allergic reaction to some substance (particularly products used on the lips, such as lip gloss/stick/balm, and even dental care/oral hygiene products, such as toothpaste) poorly fitting dentures (or no teeth or no dentures at all) usually petroleum jelly can help but because of the many reasons for the cracks there is no cure

Candida infections cause it and you'd need an anti-fungal cream and the B deficiency is quite common - I have it and I get these painful cracks all the time. I use zinc oxide cream (like a diaper rash cream) and petrolem jelly during the day and then at night I use polysporin ointment (not the cream). They still come back but this helps with the pain it causes and the redness.

Perhaps you getting to much sun, not enough water, or you just smile too much. No matter what the reason go see a doctor or dermitologist (sp?) because it will make you feel better knowing why. Good luck and keep smileing...oops!

The real answer: Imbalance in your diet: a combination of too much acid(whether fruit acids, soft drinks, or others) or simple carbohydrate in your diet(such as from fruits, softdrinks, pastries, starches/sugars) and not enough animal fat and protein. However, if you're minimal with your consumption of acids and simple carbohydrates, cracks are less likely to occur. For real. Best animal fat and protein for typical diets are fatty beef, other fatty animal flesh, whole eggs, mellow brie cheese such as the 'Supreme' brand, and whole milk. Also, nutritional yeasts can be helpful too. All that's the real deal. It's a matter of balance in your diet.
