some parts of the US call it pop. i live in new england where we call it soda (i assume shortened from soda pop) and i went to see my aunt who lives in chicago and she told me to go to the pop machine and get her something and i couldnt for the life of me figure out what she had told me to do. its not that i dont know what pop means i just never actually heard anyone say it before and it wasnt really in my list of possible words she could have said.

Different places have different words for the same thing. The US is a different place to Canada, hence the possibility of having different words.
